In 2376, Tom Paris, helmsman of the USS Voyager, who was under the influence of a neurogenic interface, fired an optronic pulse at Voyager, successfully disrupting the tractor beam the crew had used to lock onto Paris's shuttle, "Alice." Paris then came about and fired at Voyager, and subsequently escaped at warp, masking his warp signature so as not to be followed. (VOY: "Alice")
