Odysseus was a character in Greek mythology and the main character in Earth poet Homer's epic poem Odyssey. The king of the Greek island of Ithaca, Odysseus was renowned for his guile and resourcefulness, and was most famous for the ten years it took him to return home after the Trojan War.

In 2000, Henry Janeway pointed out to his son Jason Janeway that none of the classic heroes had come from nuclear families – in fact, Odysseus, Hercules, and Achilles were all products of single parent upbringings. (VOY: "11:59")

According to Apollo in 2267, Humans of the 23rd century were much like Odysseus, Agamemnon, or Hector, full of fire and with a strong will. (TOS: "Who Mourns for Adonais?")

In 2373, Harry Kim told Neelix the story of Odysseus and the Sirens when recounting his experiences amongst the Taresians. (VOY: "Favorite Son")

This character was only mentioned in dialogue.
According to Michael Chabon, the character of Craft from ST: "Calypso" is based on Odysseus. Chabon said in a 2018 interview, "I would like to just take Craft and just retell the story of Odysseus' wanderings and the war that he fought in, and everything that befell Odysseus, and try to find what he would do in a very Trek kind of context."
