For the novel series, please see Star Trek: New Earth.
For the Alpha Quadrant planet with this name in Latin, please see Terra Nova.

New Earth was the third planet of a seven-planet star system orbiting a yellow dwarf star in the Delta Quadrant.

The ambient temperature was sufficient to allow outdoor bathing for at least a part of the year. The planet differed from Earth in that plasma storms occurred randomly in the upper atmosphere.

The name of the planet was coined by Captain Kathryn Janeway and Commander Chakotay in 2372, when they were forced to leave the USS Voyager and live on the planet because of a rare viral infection that they'd contracted from an insect bite.

Janeway and Chakotay set up a modular shelter to serve as a permanent home. Although these facilities were basic, they were in keeping with their low-tech environment. The area contained a forest and at least one river, and was home to a type of burrowing insect, and a primate species, one of those primates who started following Janeway, alerting her to an incoming ion storm even though only successful at second time with Janeway first being preoccupied observing the creature attempting to communicate with it.

Janeway designated different areas of the planet; notably, one she designated Beta 4, which she used in function of her insect trap research.

The Vidiians were also aware of the planet and happened to have developed an anti-viral agent to combat the disease. (VOY: "Resolutions")

According to Star Trek: Star Charts (p. 85), the New Earth system was a binary star system with a G-class star and a M-class star. The USS Voyager visited this system on stardate 49690. The Federation starship traveled 70 light years; then, on stardate 49892, the Voyager returned to New Earth to pick up Janeway and Chakotay.
