Enterprise enters a neutronic storm
A neutronic storm is a type of interstellar phenomena, a storm of neutron radiation and gasses that can travel at faster-than-light speeds.
In the mid-21st century, the Vulcan science vessel T'Plana encountered a type-5 neutronic storm and was destroyed with all hands.
In 2152, Enterprise encountered a neutronic storm near Takret space. To protect themselves from the radiation, the entire crew (and all of the animals that Doctor Phlox kept in sickbay) took refuge in the catwalk for eight days, which was protected because it was composed of osmium alloys. Sickbay would have been the next-best protected space, but would not have been big enough to fit the entire crew.
The Takret are immune to the radiation in a neutronic storm, whereas species such as Humans or Denobulans would suffer permanent brain damage after only 22 minutes of exposure. (ENT: "The Catwalk")
In 2376, Dala (while impersonating Captain Janeway) informed two Telsian miners that they had to leave orbit without paying them for their Bolomite because a neutronic storm was approaching and interfering with their communications. (VOY: "Live Fast and Prosper")
