Nathan Hale was a famous 18th century American military officer and spy in the American Revolution.

When the USS Voyager was controlled by the Kazon, leaving only The Doctor and Lon Suder to recapture the ship, The Doctor told himself that he was no Che Guevara or Nathan Hale, and that he was "a doctor, not a counter-insurgent". (VOY: "Basics, Part II")
