Multiple star systems are a form of the standard star system model which contain more than one active star.
Binary star system
A binary star system was a star system that had two stars at its center. The two stars orbited each other around their common center of gravity, also known as their barycenter.

Trinary star system
A trinary star system was a star system made up of three stars. Two or three of the stars could possibly orbit around a common center of gravity, also known as their barycenter. Often, trinary stars consist of a binary pair that orbited each other in relatively close proximity with a third star that is further away, in a more "planetary" style orbit.
In 2372, Jadzia Dax asked for Captain Benjamin Sisko's permission to send a science team to investigate a trinary star system. Sisko told her the team could take the USS Rubicon. (DS9: "Accession")
