A mountain was a geological formation that rises significantly higher than the surrounding land, sometimes many kilometers high. Although there was no standard definition, a hill was usually much smaller than a mountain. Mountains and hills were a common occurrence on many planets, both inhabited and not.

The area surrounding Farpoint Station and Old Bandi City on the planet Deneb IV consisted of mountains. (TNG: "Encounter at Farpoint")

In the early 2370s, a Klingon civilian transport ship crashed in a mountainous area of the planet Galorda Prime. (DS9: "Rules of Engagement")

On Earth, the tallest mountain was Mount Everest in the Himalayas. Also very tall was the Tibetan plateau.

Trapped on Torga IV in the Gamma Quadrant, Enrique Muñiz told Miles O'Brien that "...Ireland didn't have any mountains, it had hills." He jokingly called O'Brien a "mountain man... an old mountain man", to which O'Brien took offense. (DS9: "The Ship")

Ireland does have mountains although not very large ones.
