Bajoran monastery garden

The garden of the monastery

The Monastery of the Kai was the religious domicile of the Bajoran spiritual leader on Bajor.

The monastery featured several gardens and arboretums with rivers, plants, waterfalls, and bridges.

In 2369, Commander Benjamin Sisko visited the monastery and met Vedek Bareil Antos for the first time in the gardens of the monastery. Bareil started his service at the monastery as a gardener, after the Occupation of Bajor. (DS9: "In the Hands of the Prophets")

The monastery garden location was shot at Fern Dell (Ferndale), a section of Hollywood's Griffith Park, in Los Angeles. (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion, pp. 68-69 & 81; Star Trek Encyclopedia) David Livingston recalled, "I wanted to go there for Bareil's sanctuary. Marvin Rush did a beautiful job of photographing it, and we added atmosphere and smoke to give it an ethereal quality." Added Robert della Santina, "It's perfect for the monastery scenes, with that brook running through it–visually anyway. But soundwise, it's a disaster, so we ended up having to loop a lot of dialogue later on." (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion, pp. 68 & 81)
The statues in the garden, seen in the background, were sketched and designed by Ricardo Delgado in January 1992 and were featured throughout the run of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Companion, p. 69)
