The biosphere of the genome colony on Moab IV

Moab IV was the fourth planet in the Moab planetary system. This system was located within the Moab sector. This was a large, barren planet, and was the site of the human Genome Colony. This colony was founded during the mid-22nd century. The planet was located outside Federation territory, near Deep Space 3 and Starbase 301.

To be precise, it was said to be founded "two centuries" before 2368. The lack of familiarity with Transporter technology might provide further hints as to when it's inhabitants left Earth.

The planet itself was entirely uninhabitable and only the biosphere constructed for the colony allowed for Human settlement. Within the biosphere, which had been built to withstand the harsh environment and resist earthquakes up to 8.7 on the Richter scale, the environment was lush and beautiful as well as meticulously maintained. In the 24th century, the colony had several thousand colonists.

In 2368, a stellar core fragment from a collapsed neutron star passed through the sector where Moab IV is located. The passing fragment, which had density of over ten million tons per square centimeter, posed a serious threat to the colony. Its mass would create large earthquakes, far beyond what the colony was designed to withstand. Because of this unique danger, the isolationist colony made a one-time exception to their policy against outside contact and accepted assistance from the USS Enterprise-D. (TNG: "The Masterpiece Society")

According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia, Moab IV was "named for the ancient kingdom that flourished on Earth during biblical times in what is now Jordan."
The surface of Moab IV was a matte painting created by Illusion Arts, Inc.. (Cinefantastique, Vol. 25, No. 6/Vol. 26, No. 1, p. 73)
According to the Star Trek: Star Charts ("United Federation of Planets I"), Moab IV (Genome Colony) was listed as a member planet of the Federation in 2378. Note: The author, Geoffrey Mandel, inadvertently listed this planet as Moab VI.
