The Mizarians were a humanoid species from the Alpha Quadrant. They were native to the planet Mizar II.

Physiology[]

Mizarians are a humanoid species with whitish facial skin with sharp, vertical folds above and below their eyes. This distinctive facial trait sets them apart, as most humanoid species typically have facial skin with horizontal lines. The vertical folds in Mizarian facial skin contribute to their distinctive and memorable appearance. (TNG: "Allegiance")

Some Mizarians, like Malvus, had facial hair. (LD: "An Embarrassment Of Dooplers")

Society and Culture[]

Mizarian society revolved around the principle of non-resistance. They upheld a strong commitment to peace and non-violence, even in the face of adversity. This pacifist philosophy had a profound impact on their culture, shaping their interactions with other species and their approach to conflict resolution.

The Mizarians' tendency to avoid confrontation led to them being frequently conquered throughout their history. Their approach to survival involved offering no resistance to their aggressors, a strategy that allowed them to endure these invasions but left them vulnerable to further attacks. Despite their challenges, the Mizarians maintained their commitment to non-violence.

Kova Tholl claimed that Mizarians were renowned for their intellectual prowess, though specific details regarding the nature of their intelligence remain limited. (TNG: "Allegiance")

History[]

The history of the Mizarians is marked by a series of conquests and invasions. Over a period of three centuries, they faced six separate instances of being conquered by neighboring species. The fact that they survived each invasion without resistance is a testament to their unwavering commitment to non-violence. (TNG: "Allegiance")

While the Mizarians' history is largely defined by their struggles with conquest, they also participated in galactic events such as the Trade Agreements Conference on Betazed in 2366. This event demonstrates their willingness to engage in diplomatic relations and trade with other species. (TNG: "Ménage à Troi")

A Mizarian was a customer in a bar on Torman V, when Jean-Luc Picard, Beverly Crusher and Worf were undercover on the planet in 2369. (TNG: "Chain Of Command, Part I")

A Mizarian was aboard the USS Enterprise-D shortly before it was destroyed in 2371. (Star Trek Generations)

Technology[]

Given their preference for non-violence and their commitment to peaceful coexistence, their technological advancements were primarily focused on areas such as agriculture, medicine, and infrastructure development, rather than military or defensive technologies. (TNG: "Allegiance")

Mizarian makeup in Star Trek Generations

Mizarian makeup being applied

According to an internal reference document, listing all the aliens seen in Star Trek: The Next Generation, which was circulated around the time of the production of TNG Season 5, the Mizarians were given the description of "a highly intelligent and pacifistic race, humanoid in appearance buy with whitish facial skin sharply folded along vertical rather than horizontal lines above and below the eyes."

Michael Westmore once commented that a typical Mizerian looked "almost like a villain from Dick Tracy." The elaborate hood often seen atop a Mizarian's head led the TNG makeup crew to nickname one of these aliens (namely, Kova Tholl) "The Sydney Opera House Head." (Star Trek: The Next Generation Makeup FX Journal, p. 65)
