A mission specialist was a position in Starfleet held by either Starfleet personnel or civilians during certain missions. A mission specialist was assigned to limited or specific fields of the mission, such as scientific research or first contact missions.
Other functions included pilot, engineer, mission commander, medical, xenologist, exobiology, physicist, cosmologist, or tactical operations. (citation needed • edit)
