The mind-sifter (also referred to as a "mind-ripper") is a piece of 23rd century Klingon technology used for interrogations. It reaches directly into the mind and is able to record thoughts stored there.

The mechanism has a variable setting; at lower settings, it scans only surface thoughts, and causes little harm. At the higher settings, it records every thought, a process that empties the subject's mind, permanently. Vulcan mental disciplines permit members of that species to deceive the mechanism with false thoughts at settings up to Force 4, which is normally capable of penetrating any pretense.

Kor threatened to use such a device on Captain Kirk while occupying Organia, on stardate 3198.4. Spock was able to withstand the effects of this device, but Kirk was warned it could permanently damage him. (TOS: "Errand of Mercy")
