On 20th century earth, midshipman were considered to be officers in the old US Navy. This is despite the fact that they do not yet posess their comissions. They outrank any enlisted man such as CPOs or WOs, but they are also outranked by any other officer such as an ensign. In the Royal Navy, midshipmen are commissioned officers.

Midshipman is an old naval designation for a student in training to become a commissioned officer, relative to the designation of cadet. Attendees of Starfleet Academy during the 23rd century were referred to as midshipmen.
