Michael Cavanaugh (born 21 November 1942; age 71) is an actor from New York City, New York, who, in 1990, appeared on Star Trek: The Next Generation, playing Captain Robert DeSoto in the third season episode "Tin Man".

Other television series in which he has appeared include CHiPs (1981, with Michael Dorn and Robert Pine), T.J. Hooker (1983, starring William Shatner, James Darren and Richard Herd), The A-Team (1984, starring Dwight Schultz, Melinda Culea, William Lucking, and Lance LeGault), L.A. Law (1989, with Corbin Bernsen and Larry Drake), Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993, starring Teri Hatcher), NYPD Blue (1996, with Sharon Lawrence and Gordon Clapp), Carnivàle (2003, with Adrienne Barbeau, Clancy Brown, John Fleck, and John Savage), and Monk (with Ryan Bollman). He also had a recurring role as "Joseph O'Laughlin" on the hit FOX-TV series 24, which featured Penny Johnson, and starred as an obsessed government agent seeking an alien on Earth in the science fiction series Starman.

Cavanaugh has also appeared in a number of films, including The Enforcer (1976, with John Crawford), The Gauntlet (1977, with Roy Jenson), Gray Lady Down (1978, with Ronny Cox and Robert Ito), The Lady in Red (1979, with Louise Fletcher, Christopher Lloyd, and Dick Miller), Any Which Way You Can (1980, with Roy Jenson, Logan Ramsey, Dick Durock, Jack Murdock, and George Murdock), Heart Like a Wheel (1983, with Dick Miller and Ellen Geer), A Passion to Kill (1994, starring Scott Bakula and France Nuyen), Breast Men (1997, with Matt Frewer, Terry O'Quinn, Louise Fletcher, and Raphael Sbarge), The Haunting (1999, with Virginia Madsen), Dancing in September (2000, with LeVar Burton), Red Dragon (2002, with John Rubinstein, William Lucking, and Elizabeth Dennehy), and Holes (2003, with Eric Pierpoint and Jeff Ricketts).
