Mezoti was a Norcadian female former Borg drone, and a Delta Quadrant native who lived during the late 24th century.

Early life[]

Mezoti was born on a Theta class planetoid in 2368. (VOY: "Collective", "Ashes to Ashes")

Though not explicitly stated, the Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 2, p. 87) and Star Trek: The Official Guide to Our Universe (p. 85) presume Mezoti is describing Norcadia Prime.

Life as a Borg drone[]

Mezoti was assimilated early in her life by the Borg. At the age of eight, in 2376, Mezoti was considered to be a neonatal drone, while maturing aboard a Borg cube.

That year, her cube was disabled by a pathogen that killed all the adult drones. She and five other young drones – First, Icheb, Azan, Rebi, and a prenatal drone – were disconnected from the Collective and prematurely released from the maturation chambers after they went offline.

They captured the Delta Flyer with Chakotay, Tom Paris, Harry Kim, and Neelix on board. The five Borg children demanded USS Voyager's deflector array in exchange for the hostages. The deflector array would have allowed them to contact the Borg, but would have left Voyager unable to go to warp.

Seven of Nine came aboard the ship from Voyager, and observed that the drones were incomplete, notably having not yet formed their thoracic nodes. As such, she attempted to take control of the group, but was rebuffed by First. After she was taken to the hostages, Mezoti noticed that Paris was attempting to disconnect the security field they were held in. She shot Tom Paris and justified it as him having "learned a lesson".

Later, when encountered by Captain Kathryn Janeway, Mezoti was immediately recognized as being a Norcadian. Thereafter, Seven discovered that the Borg Collective had already received a distress call from the cube, but had determined the children to be irrelevant and had not dispatched any other ships to reconnect them to the hive mind. After the children realized this, they decided to leave the cube. (VOY: "Collective")

She would later recall feeling afraid and alone upon her disconnection. (VOY: "The Haunting of Deck Twelve")

USS Voyager[]

After her implants were removed and she was freed from Borg influence, Mezoti slowly regained her individuality with the help of Seven of Nine and the three remaining fellow former drone children, Icheb, Azan and Rebi. When she learned that her "designation" was Mezoti, she thought of it "it's a pretty name." (VOY: "Collective")

Shortly after experiencing her first taste of freedom, Mezoti disobeyed instructions to wait in the cargo bay until Seven of Nine returned, choosing instead to go to the astrometrics lab. There, she received a distress call from Lyndsay Ballard, a former Voyager crew member who had died and was later revived by the Kobali. In an attempt to reroute the call to Captain Janeway, she ended the transmission instead. When discovered by Tuvok and Seven, she tried to re-establish contact with Ballard, which temporarily distracted them from disciplining her.

In developing her parenting technique, Seven of Nine established a structured schedule with the children:

  • 07:00 hrs: The children emerge from their alcoves. Nutrients are ingested in the mess hall prior to proceeding to the science lab to begin classes.
  • 13:00 hrs: Nutrients are consumed a second time, before reporting to the holodeck, where they're studying comparative alien physiology.
  • 14:30-15:00 hrs: Exercise.
  • 15:00-16:00 hrs: Fun (painting, sculpting, kadis-kot)
Scheduled fun

The children molding with clay

For their first scheduled period of recreational activities, Mezoti became fast friends with Naomi Wildman, who offered to braid her hair like hers, a conversation Seven initially considered irrelevant while engaging in an hour of "recreational activity". They proceeded to play a game of kadis-kot together, when Mezoti realized that Azan and Rebi were cheating against Naomi through their neural interface.

During a later orchestrated period of recreation activities, Mezoti sculpted a bust of Seven of Nine out of clay, despite her instructions to create a geometric shape. Mezoti insisted that what she made "was more fun," and upon seeking Seven's approval, was told it was "crude; however, it does demonstrate ingenuity and individuality."

Later, Seven allowed the children to go to the holodeck by themselves. Harry Kim was invited to join them, after he gave Mezoti the Ballard's hairbrush after she admired it. Kim then offered for them to visit the Vulcan holoprogram called the "Temple of T'Panit," adding that would be able to make a few of their own tweaks to make it less boring. (VOY: "Ashes to Ashes")

First Annual Voyager Science Fair

Mezoti's entry for the science fair

Later that year, she completed the First Annual Voyager Science Fair, where her project involved a Teirenian ant colony that she infused the soil with a blue ion dye, which caused the insects to be luminescent. She explained that "the drones produce a fluorescent enzyme that's activated by the queen." After Janeway drew an analogy between insects and the Borg, Seven explained that the project was Mezoti's idea, and she didn't want to discourage her individuality. Mezoti simply explained she did it because, "I like bugs."

Several days later, Mezoti was unable to regenerate as she missed Icheb, who had returned to his parents Leucon and Yifay. After expressing her own reluctance to return to her own parents, should they be found, she then revealed to Seven that Icheb was captured aboard a ship, and not on the surface of the Brunali homeworld as they were previously told. Mezoti was key in helping Seven realize that Icheb's parents had lied about the circumstances of his assimilation and that they had ulterior motives in welcoming him home. (VOY: "Child's Play")

In early 2377, she and the other former-Borg children were in Cargo Bay 2 regenerating when main power was shut down. Their regeneration alcoves were shut off, so Neelix entertained them for the duration of the blackout by telling them a ghost story about a electromagnetic lifeform. (VOY: "The Haunting of Deck Twelve")

A short time later, and though unable to contact the Norcadians, Voyager was successful in locating Azan and Rebi's people, the Wysanti. The Wysanti agreed to give Mezoti a home with the twins. Prior to her leaving, she studied information on their culture. Upon leaving Voyager, she hugged Seven, saying she preferred the Human way of saying goodbye to Wysanti tradition, in which it was not customary to say goodbye. (VOY: "Imperfection")

Background information[]

Mezoti was played by Marley S. McClean.

She, along with the twins (Azan and Rebi), are notable as being one of the only Borg to have a head of hair, even as a full drone.
