|Affiliation:||United Federation of Planets|
Mercury (or Sol I) was the first planet of the Sol planetary system. The planet was located in the inner system. This system was located in Sector 001 (Sol Sector), which was a region of space in the Alpha Quadrant. The planet was affiliated with the United Federation of Planets.
In 1969, the USS Enterprise passed Mercury as it attempted a slingshot effect around Sol in an effort at returning to 2267. When the Enterprise passed this innermost planet, the gravitational pull of the star increased. (TOS: "Tomorrow is Yesterday")
Mercury was featured in an amusing story a holographic Doctor Stephen Hawking told his holographic poker partners Albert Einstein and Sir Isaac Newton and Data. He said that "in that frame of reference the perihelion of Mercury would have precessed in the opposite direction!" Albert Einstein found this "a great story"; Sir Isaac Newton, however, did not understand the joke. (TNG: "Descent")
In the The Adventures of Captain Proton holoprogram series, Mercury was controlled by Doctor Chaotica. When he tried to conquer Earth, he claimed that those who oppose him "will face a dire fate as slaves in the mines of Mercury." (VOY: "Bride of Chaotica!")
|The Sol System|
|Sol • Mercury • Venus • Earth (Luna) • Mars (Deimos) • Asteroid Belt • Jupiter (Europa; Ganymede) • Saturn (Mimas; Rhea; Titan) • Uranus • Neptune (Triton) • Pluto|
This chart naming stars within twenty light years of Sol was drawn by Rick Sternbach for the Star Trek Spaceflight Chronology in the late 1970s. Found on page 77, the chart showed Earth commercial and exploration routes after the use of warp drive began. This chart was seen in the episodes "The Naked Now", "The Last Outpost", "Datalore", and "Conspiracy".
"The Explored Galaxy"
"The Explored Galaxy" was a map of charted space in the Alpha Quadrant. Sol was located between the Tholian Assembly and Romulus. Both locations were identified in DS9: "The Search, Part II", "Call to Arms" as being located in this quadrant. The chart, first seen chronologically in Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, was also seen in several Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes set in the 24th century, from the year 2364 to 2370. These were TNG: "Conspiracy", "The Measure Of A Man", "The Emissary", "The Mind's Eye", "The Game", and DS9: "In the Hands of the Prophets", "Cardassians".
