The Mercury-Redstone was a 20th century expendable rocket used by NASA in the Mercury Program for launching astronauts into space. It was a variant of the classic Redstone missile. (Star Trek: Enterprise)
A schematic of this rocket was seen in the opening credits superimposed over background images, including an image of the Spirit of St. Louis.
