The Merchantman was a small civilian freighter in service during the late 23rd century.

In 2285, Klingon operative Valkris hired the Merchantman to carry classified Federation data regarding the Genesis Device to a Klingon Bird-of-Prey commanded by Kruge. After Kruge learned that Valkris had viewed the data, he ordered the Merchantman destroyed with all aboard. (Star Trek III: The Search for Spock)

Background information[]

This craft was not named on screen. The name "Merchantman" was taken from the script and the call sheets for Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. [1]

The stage directions in the revised final draft of the film's script suggested that the ship was in Organian space when it was attacked and destroyed. Also in the script, the craft's exterior was described as "a dark-looking merchantman" whereas its interior was characterized as "small and grubby." [2]

The interior of the Merchantman was represented with a set on Paramount Stage 5. (Information from call sheets)
