Memory Alpha: Manual of Style

This article contains guidelines for presentation of titles of things referred to within Memory Alpha articles. For guidelines relating to the naming of Memory Alpha articles, see Memory Alpha:Naming conventions.

Italic Titles

You should use italics for titles of books, movies, television series, magazines, and the names of starships. Italic markup consists of two single quotes, both before and after the italicized text. In general, if the title is also a link, you can put the italic markup outside the brackets. (But see the Voyager example below for an exception.) As a rule of thumb, remember that italics are used for the titles of larger works.

  • Star Trek Encyclopedia, Anslem
    • Star Trek Encyclopedia, Anslem
  • Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek: Nemesis
    • Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek: Nemesis
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
    • Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
  • USS Voyager, USS Enterprise (NCC-1701), only the name is italicized, not the classification or designation. This link will require a pipe character (a "|"), as italics tags will not work within a link
    • USS Voyager, USS Enterprise (NCC-1701)

"Quoted" Titles

Use "quotes" for the titles of individual episodes of television shows, short stories, articles, songs, and poems (except for epic poems, e.g. Odyssey and Iliad). There is no special markup needed for quotes - just use the double-quote key both before and after the quoted text. In general, if the title is also a link, you can put the quotes outside the brackets. As a rule of thumb, remember that double quotes are used for the titles of smaller works.

  • "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II", "For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky"
    • "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II", "For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky"
