Melona IV was the uninhabited fourth planet in its star system.

In 2368, the USS Enterprise-D delivered Federation colonists and supplies to the planet. Several Enterprise crewmembers, including Commander Riker, Dr. Beverly Crusher, and Lieutenant Commander Data, assisted in establishing the Melona colony.

Later that year, Melona IV was stripped of all life by the Crystalline Entity, which also claimed the lives of two colonists, one of them being civilian engineer Carmen Davila. The remainder of the colonists and the Enterprise personnel managed to survive by hiding in nearby caves rich with kelbonite and fistrium. (TNG: "Silicon Avatar")

Background information[]

According to the script, the pronunciation for Melona was "mel-OWN-uh". The planet is described, prior to its destruction, as being "a lush and verdant world of hills, grasses, and wild flowers". [1]

The surface scenes were filmed on location at the Golden Oak Ranch on Wednesday 7 August 1991.

According to Star Trek: Star Charts ("United Federation of Planets I"), Melona IV was listed as a Federation member in 2378.

The Star Trek Encyclopedia (4th ed., vol. 2, p. 34) and StarTrek.com classified Melona IV as a class M planet. [2]
