Meklinite was a substance sometimes found within asteroids which was known to interfere with ships' sensor scans.

The substance was found in high quantities in an asteroid belt near the Alpha Omicron system in 2367, which may explain why the spaceborne creatures found to be living within the belt (such as "Junior") were not previously detected. (TNG: "Galaxy's Child")
