The medulla oblongata was the lower half of the brain stem.
After Spock's brain was separated from his body in 2268, his disembodied voice commented to Leonard McCoy that his medulla oblongata was "hard at work apparently breathing, apparently pumping blood, apparently maintaining a normal physiologic temperature." (TOS: "Spock's Brain")
