Matt Franklin was a Starfleet officer with the rank of ensign serving on board the USS Jenolan in 2294. He was one of only two survivors (the other being Captain Montgomery Scott) when the ship crashed on the surface of a Dyson sphere in that year. He and Scott put themselves into stasis using a jury-rigged transporter. Although Scott's pattern was retrieved with minimal degradation after being in stasis for seventy-five years, Franklin died when his pattern in the pattern buffer was lost after having degraded by 53 percent.
