Pyrotechnics in use in the simulator.

The Mark IV bridge simulator is a mock-up of the refitted bridge of the USS Enterprise for use by Starfleet cadets in Starfleet Academy training missionss, such as the Kobayashi Maru scenario.

The simulator was rigged with pyrotechnics in order to realistically simulate battle conditions. As a result of the pyrotechnics, the simulator frequently requires maintenence. Smoking was prohibited in the simulator.

Captain Spock had a class of cadets, under the command of Saavik, make use of the simulator in 2285, joined by Starfleet officers Leonard McCoy, Hikaru Sulu, Uhura, and Montgomery Scott. Admiral James T. Kirk also visited the simulator to watch the cadets' performance on the Kobayashi Maru scenario. (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan)

With the advent of holographic technology, physical simulators fell out of use and similar conditions could be reproduced on holodecks. (VOY: "Learning Curve")

"No smoking" sign visible.

Background

The simulator set was obviously a reuse of the Enterprise bridge in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. The only noticeable difference is the lack of the "No Smoking" sign on the "real" Enterprise bridge as seen throughout the rest of the movie.

Apocrypha

The simulator (or one very much like it) is used in the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy computer game, however, the ship designation and configuration changes from mission to mission.
