A magnetic field is a field in which its particles are charged with electricity, causing them to point to one direction.

This field has the ability to influence materials which were sensitive to magnetism, like magnets or iron. All planets and stars, large or small, have a magnetic field. Its strength depensed on the mass and materials of the object.

The science of field density may be related to magnetic fields.

Naturally-occurring magnetic fields, such as from planets' polar regions, can interfere with sensors and transporters. (TNG: "Final Mission"; DS9: "Whispers"; Star Trek Into Darkness)

During a scan of Aldean DNA, Doctor Beverly Crusher was able to confirm that a failure of the magnetic field of Aldea was not responsible for the Aldeans' sterility. (TNG: "When The Bough Breaks")

Lieutenant Jadzia Dax read high magnetic field variations while an energy creation approached the four Deep Space 9 officers trapped inside the Wadi game Chula. (DS9: "Move Along Home")

Federation runabout hulls were made out of metallic composites which interacted with magnetic fields. In 2369, Chief Miles O'Brien upgraded a probe with a differential magnetometer and was able to detec the missing USS Yangtzee Kiang. (DS9: "Battle Lines")

Duranium alloy emits a magnetic field that can interfere with sensors. (DS9: "Dramatis Personae")

Artificial magnetic fields, better know as electromagnetic fields, can be created and manipulated for a number of uses, including containing antimatter in antimatter containmnet pods, magnetizing gravity boots, and generating an electromagnetic pulse to jam communications. (Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual, ENT: "Babel One", DS9: "Sacrifice of Angels")
