The Lionfish was a type of small poisonous fish native to Earth.

An image depicting a lionfish was scanned by the Talosians as they reviewed the library computer files on board USS Enterprise in 2254. (TOS-R: "The Cage")

Captain Jean-Luc Picard kept a lionfish named Livingston in his ready room on board the USS Enterprise-D and USS Enterprise-E from 2364 to 2373. (TNG, Star Trek Generations, Star Trek: First Contact)

According to Mike Okuda, regarding the lionfish image appearing in The Original Series remastered: "I didn't initially think of the lionfish as a nod to Livingston. I picked the image just because I thought it was a cool photo, but a few moments later I thought of the Livingston tie-in, which I liked a lot... I took the photo of the lionfish at the Waikiki Aquarium in Honolulu."
Livingston was portrayed by a red lionfish (Pterois volitans) in nearly every appearance. Only in "Devil's Due" did the fish change species and appear as a radial firefish (Pterois radiata).
