Les Misérables is a novel by the French Human writer Victor Hugo, published in 1862.

Michael Eddington read the novel many times and when he betrayed the Federation and joined the Maquis, he came to see himself as the hero of the novel, Jean Valjean. He compared Captain Benjamin Sisko to the villainous Inspector Javert.

Sisko had also read the book by that time, and while persuing Eddington, started reading it again. (DS9: "For the Uniform")
