Kim Thio is a set paramedic for film, television, commercial, and music video productions. He coordinated paramedical efforts on the set of 2009's Star Trek. [1]

Training and work history Edit

Thio studied at UCLA (University of California at Los Angeles) Medical Center and at the US Department of Labor at the University of San Diego. He trained in earthquake management and in the medical management of hazardous materials at the California Office of Emergency Services Specialized Training Institute. He also trained in workplace inspection techniques at the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in San Diego.

Between 1976 and 2003, Thio worked as a paramedic with American Medical Response, and since 1978, he has worked with various production companies as a studio first aid medic. From 1994 through 2003, he was a flight paramedic for the Ventura County Sheriff's Department. Thio has been a member of IATSE Local 767 since 2001.

TV and film career Edit

Thio was a set medic on the 1984-91 HBO sports comedy series 1st & Ten, which starred John Kassir. Thio returned to television as a set and construction medic on the short-lived NBC series Hidden Hills. During the 2003-04 television season, Thio was a construction medic on the HBO series Carnivàle (starring Adrienne Barbeau, Clancy Brown, John Fleck, Robert Knepper, Diane Salinger, and John Savage) and a set medic on the NBC series The West Wing.

The first film Thio worked on as a set medic was the 1985 Paramount Pictures release Friday the 13th: A New Beginning, featuring Richard Lineback. He returned to film production as a construction medic on the 2002 comedies Showtime, which featured TOS star William Shatner, and The Country Bears, which starred Diedrich Bader. (Both of these films featured Christopher Darga.)

Thio worked on numerous films released in 2004, including The Big Bounce (featuring Bebe Neuwirth), The Day After Tomorrow, The Terminal (featuring Jude Ciccolella and Zoe Saldana), National Treasure (starring Ron Canada, Don McManus nad Christopher Plummer), and The Aviator (featuring Adam Scott and Brent Spiner). His 2005 credits include Hostage (starring Jimmy Bennett, Tina Lifford, and Glenn Morshower) and Serenity (starring Ron Glass).

More recently, he was the supervising medic on the 2006 drama film Flicka (starring Jeffrey Nordling and Dey Young) and worked as a construction/rigging medic on The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause (featuring Michael Dorn), Live Free or Die Hard (featuring Tim Russ), and the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels Dead Man's Chest (2006) and At World's End (2007), both featuring Lee Arenberg. His most recent film credit is Paramount's 2008 blockbuster, Iron Man, featuring Bill Smitrovich and Faran Tahir.

In addition to Star Trek, Thio's upcoming credits include The House Bunny (featuring Christopher McDonald) and the fourth Fast and the Furious film, simply titled Fast and Furious.
