The Kelvin type was a class of 23rd century Federation starships.
The Kelvin design had a single ventral warp nacelle housing the ship's warp drive engine. Its shipboard weaponry included several rapid fire torpedo launchers that fired blue photon torpedoes and several phaser banks that fired red phaser beams. The shuttlebay was located in the aft section of the upper secondary hull. This type of ship could carry a crew of at least 800.
In 2233, a vessel of this type, the USS Kelvin, was attacked and destroyed by the Romulan mining vessel, the Narada. The incursion of the Narada and destruction of the USS Kelvin triggered the creation of an alternate reality. (Star Trek)

According to Intel Corporation's Starfleet Shipyard sitewbm, the Kelvin's impulse engines were powered by four deuterium fusion reactors and the inside of the warp nacelle contains two rows of massive semi-circular warp coils.
The official website for the movie states that the Kelvin was used primarily as a survey vessel.
The blue bolts were identified as photon torpedoes in the script of Star Trek. [1]
The USS Kelvin's exterior was designed by Ryan Church; the interiors, including the bridge, corridors, the turbolift and the shuttlebay, were designed by James Clyne. Regarding the look, Clyne said J.J. Abrams and Scott Chambliss wanted the Kelvin to be more like traditional Star Trek designs, but also to be more "functional" and have "more of a battleship aesthetic." Clyne's inspiration for the Kelvin's bridge came from the bridge of the original USS Enterprise, the bridge of the USS Reliant and current military ships and submarines. [2]
According to the Star Trek Blu-ray, the Kelvin was 1500 feet (457.2 meters) long. According to Star Trek - The Art of the Film, the ship was scaled to be 2148 feet (655 meters) long.
The Gizmotron models 1/2500 scale model kit names this ship type as the Federation deep space scout. [3]
