The Kavis Alpha sector a region of space. Within this sector, there was an unnamed neutron star/red giant system and Kavis Alpha IV. The neutron star went through a cycle of sucking matter from the nearby red giant, and explosively expelling the matter into space, every 196 years.
In 2366, Doctor Paul Stubbs recorded this historic event, from the USS Enterprise-D, using a customized probe known as "The Egg". After this event, the Enterprise-D seeded a nanite colony on Kavis Alpha IV. (TNG: "Evolution")
