Katanay was a hologram, based on Chakotay, that was a character in a holonovel written by the Doctor entitled Photons Be Free.
In the novel, Katanay was a Bajoran with a tattoo and earring. He was a thug and treated the EMH character in the holonovel as a machine. He insisted that the EMH take care of a helm officer, instead of a more seriously-injured crewmember. His insistence in this matter resulted in the death of the injured crewmember.
