Kane

Ensign Kane

Ensign Kane was a Starfleet officer that served aboard the USS Enterprise-D in the 2360s.

In 2368, when a Satarran ship erased the entire crew's memories, he was found in his quarters by Commander Riker and Ensign Ro Laren. (TNG: "Conundrum")

In 2369, when the Enterprise-D encountered the only known Dyson sphere, Kane escorted Captain Montgomery Scott to his quarters, but was somewhat dismissive to Captain Scott's memories from his time in Starfleet. (TNG: "Relics")

Kane was played by Erick Weiss.
The novelization of "Relics" significantly expanded on his character, revealing that Kane was having personal problems and was being hounded by Commander Riker due to poor performance and showing up late for duty shifts. Kane also went on an away mission to the surface of the Dyson sphere where, in a fit on insanity, he began firing his phaser at various structures. The episode also mentions that Picard had been a Starfleet Academy classmate of Kane's father, who had recently retired from Starfleet, and that Picard had known the younger Kane since he was a boy.
