Jupiter (or Sol V) was an uninhabited planet. It had many moons, including Ganymede, that were inhabited. The planet was located in the outer system, and was located near an asteroid belt. It was the fifth planet in the Sol planetary system. This system was located in Sector 001 (or Sol Sector), which was a region of space in the Alpha Quadrant. The planet was affiliated with the United Federation of Planets. (TOS: "The Changeling", "By Any Other Name"; Star Trek: The Motion Picture)

An close-up image of Jupiter was contained in the library computer aboard the USS Enterprise. This data was flashed on a viewscreen when the Talosians scanned the Enterprise computer in 2254. (TOS: "The Cage" remastered)

This image featured Jupiter's famous Great Red Spot.

History

The first permanent Human presence near Jupiter may have been established by the mid-22nd century. By 2151, Jupiter Station in orbit of Jupiter served as a repair facility to Earth Starfleet and the Earth Cargo Service. (ENT: "Silent Enemy", "Fortunate Son", et al.)

Jupiter Outpost 92 was one of the outposts established in the vicinity of the planet. (TNG: "The Best of Both Worlds, Part II")

Jupiter was seen on a map depicting the Sol system scanned by Nomad. (TOS: "The Changeling")

According to Arex, the cosmic cloud encountered by the USS Enterprise in 2269 was twice the diameters of Jupiter, Saturn and Neptune in size. (TAS: "One of Our Planets Is Missing")

Tours of the lava flows on its third moon were popular by 2377. (VOY: "Life Line")

Background Information

Behind the Scenes

Jupiter was named after the Roman king of the gods in Earth's mythology.

Aster painting 1

A balloon-bourne craft in the atmosphere of Jupiter

A painting seen in several episodes aboard the USS Enterprise-D was originally created by Rick Sternbach to illustrate a (non-trek) Science Fiction called The Anvil of Jove. As such, it depicts a plane-like craft tethered to a balloon, cruising the atmosphere of Jupiter. [1]

By the time of its 2272 appearance in Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the Great Red Spot, usually considered to be a temporal (though centuries old) feature, still seems to exist and look very similar to how it looks now.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine set decorations mention the Jupiter Mining Corporation, which may be associated with this planet.

The chart of Sol/Jupiter in relation to nearby astronomical objects was taken from page T0:02:07:02 of the Star Fleet Technical Manual by Franz Joseph. (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan)

"The Explored Galaxy"

This chart was first seen, chronologically, in 2293. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country) This chart was also seen in several Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episodes set in the 24th century, from the year 2364 to 2370. These were: TNG: "Conspiracy", "The Measure Of A Man", "The Emissary", "The Mind's Eye", "The Game" and DS9: "In the Hands of the Prophets", "Cardassians".

Star Trek: Star Charts

Jupiter was classified as a J-class planet. This planet was a charter member of the United Federation of Planets in 2161. (Pgs. 22, "United Federation of Planets I")
