Joseph Charles Smith is a composer and orchestrator who worked as orchestrator for Jay Chattaway between 1989 and 1993 on the third through sixth seasons of Star Trek: The Next Generation and the first and second seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Smith earned his Master of Music, Media Writing, and Production from the University of Miami, his professional diploma in Arranging/Composition from Berklee College of Music, and his Bachelor in Music Education from West Virginia University. Between 1975 and 1980, Smith worked as teacher at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He then attended the University of Miami and became an instructor in arranging, composition, ear training, and ensembles at Miami Dade Community College between 1982 and 1984.
It was also in the late 1980s that Smith started to work as an orchestrator for Jay Chattaway on film projects including Maniac Cop (1988), Red Scorpion (1988), Bull Durham (1988), Braddock: Missing in Action III (1988), Relentless (1989), and Maniac Cop 2 (1990).
Further collaborations as composer with Chattaway include the drama Rich Girl (1991), the thriller Mirror Images (1992), Secret Games (1992), The Other Woman (1992), and Animal Crimes (1992), the drama The Pamela Principle (1992), and the drama Object of Obsession (1994).
Smith left the industry to work at the Berklee College of Music where he was Dean of Professional Writing Division between 1993 and 2003. Between 1998 and 2013 he also taught classes as a professor for Directed Study, Film Scoring, Introduction to Film Scoring, Analysis for Film Scoring, Orchestration for Film Scoring, Contemporary techniques of composition for Film Scoring, Vocal Writing, Advanced Production, Contemporary Writing, and Production. Since 1988, Smith has also been the owner of the company Pesci Music.
