Joel Goldsmith's first foray into Star Trek was being in the sound effects team for Star Trek: The Motion Picture; the score was written by his father, Jerry. In 1995, Goldsmith rearranged and performed alternate versions of his father's theme for Star Trek: Voyager, which was released as Star Trek: Voyager - "Main Title". For Star Trek: First Contact, Goldsmith again worked with his father creating additional music for the film.
Goldsmith was best known for composing the music for the Stargate television franchise. Specifically, he composed most of the scores – including the title themes – for Stargate SG-1, Stargate: Atlantis and Stargate Universe. He died on 29 April 2012 following a long battle with cancer. He was 54.
