Jessel Howard was a distant ancestor of Dr. Beverly Crusher. She lived in Scotland during the 1600s, and had beautiful red hair. The anaphasic lifeform Ronin took up residence with Jessel after he determined she had a biochemistry compatible with his energy signature. Ronin resided in a candle, and used Jessel in order to take corporeal form. Many of Jessel's female descendants were hosts for Ronin for many generations, including Felisa Howard and her mother. (TNG: "Sub Rosa")

"Sub Rosa" seems to suggest that Ronin went from mother to child, however, if each woman changed her name after marriage, Jessel's last name shouldn't have been Howard. Even if the modern Howard women (up until Beverly) kept their name and passed it down to their daughters, it seems unlikely that this would be allowed in the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries.
