Rutherford was born in Newbury Park, California. He performed in several talent shows, where he impersonated Elvis Presley and N'Sync, and worked on several commercials such as a Hallmark commercial where he played the brother of Ethan Dampf. He also played Daniel in the daytime soap The Young and the Restless.

Beside his Star Trek appearance, he was featured in the comedy Life or Something Like It (2002, with Gregory Itzin), the horror thriller Ted Bundy (2002, starring Michael Reilly Burke and with Julianna McCarthy, Bobby C. King, and Tracey Walter), and the comedy Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star (2003, with Kevin Grevioux and Spencer Garrett).

Rutherford was the vocalist in the local band Curicula in 2008.

Since 2011, he has been the lead singer of the California indie rock band The Neighbourhood. The band released their first studio album, "I Love You.", in 2013 and their second, "Wiped Out!", in 2015, both under the label of Columbia Records. Their 2012 song "Sweater Weather" became number one of the US Billboard Alternative Songs charts.

Rutherford was discussed in the news when he made a complete nude appearance in The Neighbourhood's music video "Afraid" in 2013 and when he was arrested for drug possession at the Newark airport in 2014. [1] [2]
