The Jem'Hadar battle cruiser was a type of large battleship used by the Dominion during the late 24th century.

History[]

A staple of the Dominion's Gamma Quadrant fleet, these warships were introduced to the Alpha Quadrant in mid-2373, after a large number of battle cruisers were part of the first wave of Dominion ships to pass through the Bajoran wormhole, following the incorporation of the Cardassian Union into the Dominion. (DS9: "In Purgatory's Shadow", "By Inferno's Light")

Gul Dukat commanded one of these vessels before the Dominion War, as well as during its opening battle in late 2373. (DS9: "Ties of Blood and Water", "Call to Arms") Jem'Hadar battle cruisers participated in many of the major battles in the war. (DS9: "Sacrifice of Angels", "The Changing Face of Evil", "What You Leave Behind")

For a time, these assault ships were constructed at the Monac shipyard until the shipyard and a large fleet of ships under construction there were destroyed by the Monac sun in early 2375. (DS9: "Shadows and Symbols")

Technical data[]

The battle cruiser was armed with both directed energy weapons and torpedoes; in 2373, a single vessel of this class was perceived by the crew of Deep Space 9 as a substantial threat, even with an Excelsior-class starship posted nearby. (DS9: "Ties of Blood and Water")

The main weapon of the battle cruiser was a forward torpedo launcher, which could fire multiple torpedoes in a single volley and had a wide firing arc. It also had a dorsally mounted beam emitter. (DS9: "Call to Arms", "Sacrifice of Angels")

Interior design[]

Bridge[]

Like the Jem'Hadar fighter, the battle cruiser lacked a viewscreen. Instead, its commanders used shoulder-mounted virtual sensory displays. (DS9: "Call to Arms") But not always. (DS9: "Ties of Blood and Water")

Damar's position at the helm was identified in the script for "Call to Arms".

Interrogation room[]

Interrogation room

The interrogation room was where interrogations were conducted aboard ship. The room contained a bench and a table where the interrogator sits.

Jake Sisko and Nog were beamed into the interrogation room of a battle cruiser that visited Deep Space 9 in 2373. (DS9: "In the Cards")

This room was identified in the script. It was described as "a stark room", with "a table with a chair on one side and a bench on the other, but little else in the room."

Background information[]

This class was initially identified in the DS9 Season 5 episode "Ties of Blood and Water" as a "battleship" in dialogue. This same name appeared in the script for "Call to Arms".

In the following season, the designation was superseded by the appearance of the much larger Jem'Hadar battleship appearing in "Valiant".

"Jem'Hadar warship"

According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia (3rd ed., p. 220-221), which pictured the vessel upside down in both its entry and a comparison of ship sizes, this class was referred to simply as a "Jem'Hadar warship," a term that also appeared on-screen as an okudagram, taken from the aforemention Encyclopedia entries, in both the correct and incorrect orientations, in several episodes. The term, however, was also used in several occasions on-screen to describe Jem'Hadar fighters.

Later, in the season seven episode "Shadows and Symbols", Weyoun stated that they needed "to increase production at the Monac shipyard," because they needed "more assault ships to retake the Chin'toka system." When the shipyard appeared later in the episode, it primary depicted a large number of the these and Galor-class warships. The same vessels also appeared alongside the Breen when they retook Chin'toka in "The Changing Face of Evil".

The designation of "battle cruiser", as used here, was the name described in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual (p. 169) and Star Trek Encyclopedia (3rd ed., p. 688).

According to DS9 Visual Effects Supervisor David Stipes, this battle cruiser was stated to be 2,500 feet (762 meters) long in length. [1]
