Hoshi Sato, 2154
Hoshi Sato, a Japanese female.

The term Japanese refers to anything originating from the nation-state or location of Japan on Earth, including its people and the Japanese language.

During the Second World War in which the United States of America was at war with Japan, Japanese-Americans were detained in internment camps, such as Manzanar, for "precautionary measures" due to the United States government's perception of them as a potential threat to its security. (ENT: "Detained")

Hoshi Sato and Keiko Ishikawa were also both of Japanese heritage, and both had parents living in Japan during their lifetimes. Sato was born in Kyoto, Japan. (ENT: "In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II" personnel record; DS9: "Emissary")

Although they were both born in California, Buck Bokai and Hikaru Sulu's ancestors had their roots in Japan. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home; DS9: "If Wishes Were Horses")

Individuals Edit

On the USS Enterprise-D, Assistant Chief Engineer Jim Shimoda and Nurse Alyssa Ogawa may have been of Japanese descent given their surnames. Neither one was identified as such, however. (See TNG: "The Naked Now", "Data's Day")
