The Janitza Mountains were a mountain range on Bajor that, until the early 2370s, had only ever been surveyed from orbit.

In 2371, a science team was sent up into the mountains for a six-month agrobiology expedition. (DS9: "The House of Quark") Among the participants were Keiko O'Brien, a botanist, and Sebarr, a zoologist. (DS9: "Fascination")

About two months into the expedition, it was discovered that the terrain was rougher than expected, and that the ecosystem was much more diverse than the orbital scans had indicated. It was found that every valley had an entirely different ecosystem, requiring more time than initially conceived for the mission, up to three additional months. (DS9: "Fascination")
