James I. Linn was a wardrobe supervisor on Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, along with Agnes G. Henry. He also supervised the men's wardrobe department on Star Trek III: The Search for Spock and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

Linn designed the men's costumes for Alfred Hitchcock's 1964 classic film Marnie, which featured Mariette Hartley and Meg Wyllie. He later co-designed the costumes for the films Pocket Money (1972, featuring Gregory Sierra) and Mr. Majestyk (1974, with cinematography by Richard H. Kline and special effects by Bob Dawson).

Linn worked in the wardrobe department on the films The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean (1972, featuring Roy Jenson and Anthony Zerbe), The Outfit (1973, featuring Elisha Cook, Jr., Roy Jenson and Joanna Cassidy), and Mr. Ricco (1975, starring Thalmus Rasulala and Eugene Roche). He was also the men's costumer on the 1974 TV movie The Phantom of Hollywood (featuring Elisha Cook and music by Leonard Rosenman).

In 1976, Linn was the head of the wardrobe department on the biographical film Bound for Glory, starring Ronny Cox and Gail Strickland and featuring David Clennon. This film's costumes, which Linn was responsible for handling, were designed by William Ware Theiss, best known for designing the Starfleet uniforms used on Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Linn held the position of wardrobe supervisor on the acclaimed, Academy Award-winning science fiction film Close Encounters of the Third Kind (starring Teri Garr and featuring model effects by Greg Jein). More recently, Linn worked as a costumer on the popular 1984 science fiction film The Last Starfighter, which featured Marc Alaimo, Barbara Bosson, Wil Wheaton, and Meg Wyllie. As with the three Star Trek films Linn worked on, the costumes for this film were designed by Robert Fletcher.
