Dr. James Ian Kirkland (born 24 August 1954; age 58) is a paleontologist and geologist, who co-authored the Star Trek novel, First Frontier with writer Diane Carey. Kirkland is an avid Star Trek fan, who helped to conceive the novel's depiction of dinosaurs and their modern-day humanoid descendants.
