Jalapeños are small Earth chile peppers distinguished for their "heat" or extreme spiciness when eaten. The actual "heat" compound is called Capsicum annuum whose molecular structure closely resembles vanilla. Cooks often use jalapeños as an ingredient in some dishes or as a garnish.
Neelix, unaware of the jalapeños "heat", used a few too many in a meal he prepared for the crew of the USS Voyager sending some crewpersons who consumed the meal to sickbay. Those who are familiar with the pronounciation of jalapeños pronounce it ha-luh-PANE-yo. Neelix however pronounced it "jal-ap-anos" (VOY: "Message in a Bottle").
