Writer Brannon Braga coined the name "Jaglom Shrek" from Henry Jaglom, an independent film director, and the old Yiddish word for "shriek".
Shrek was played by actor James Cromwell. The role had to be trimmed when Cromwell broke his leg in the break between filming the two parts of "Birthright". (Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion) Brannon Braga explained, "There was a whole scene in Part I in which Shrek comes clean as to why he's doing all these horrible things. He turns out to be a very sympathetic character who was once held in a prison camp himself, but that was lost from the entire storyline, so now he's somewhat one-dimensional."
