As a production designer and art director, he has over fifty film and television credits to his name. He received an Academy Award nomination for his art direction on Elia Kazan's 1976 drama The Last Tycoon, shared with production designer Gene Callahan and set decorator Jerry Wunderlich. Tige Andrews, Seymour Cassel, Jeff Corey, and Byron Morrow were among the cast members of this film.

Collis began his career as a set designer in the early 1950s. By 1956, he was working in both production design and art direction. During the 1960s and 1970s, however, he was working solely as an art director. Besides The Last Tycoon, his art direction credits include the films Save the Tiger (1973), Magnum Force (1973, featuring David Soul), and Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977, starring Louise Fletcher) and the television series Batman, The Rat Patrol, and Hawaii Five-O. After 1979, Collis worked entirely as a production designer.

The films on which Collis served as production designer include The Jerk (1979, featuring William Schallert), The Long Riders (1980, featuring Keith Carradine), Vacation (1983, featuring Miriam Flynn), Crossroads (1986, featuring John Hancock and Tim Russ, with set decoration by Marvin March), The Running Man (1987, featuring Mick Fleetwood and Dey Young, with costume design by Robert Blackman), Alien Nation (1988, featuring Roger Aaron Brown, Jeff Kober, Tom Morga and Brian Thompson), Next of Kin (1989, featuring Andreas Katsulas and Michael J. Pollard), and Flight of the Intruder (1991, with set decoration by Mickey S. Michaels).

Collis was also a production designer on four films for director Ron Howard: Night Shift (1982, featuring Vincent Schiavelli), Splash (1984, featuring Bill Smitrovich), Cocoon (1985, featuring Herta Ware), and Far and Away (1992, featuring Barbara Babcock, Anthony De Longis and Colm Meaney). Ron Howard's brother, Clint Howard, appeared in all of these films; Don Peterman was cinematographer on Splash and Cocoon.

Far and Away was Collis' last film. He died of natural causes in Encino, California, in 1998.
