J-class is the designation given to types of cargo ships utilized by Humans in the 22nd and 3rd century.

22nd Century

The ECS Horizon, a J-class vessel, in 2152.

During the 22nd century, a J-class vessel was a freighter of Earth origin, commonly used by the Earth Cargo Service. Travis Mayweather grew up on his parents' J-class freighter, the ECS Horizon.

The inertial dampers on a J-class vessel were far less advanced than that of later warp capable vessels. As such, all passengers on a J-class freighter have to hold on to handles when going to warp, or else lose their balance. This is similar to the way Humans would hang onto the handles in subway trains during in the 20th and 21st centuries. (ENT: "Horizon")

The J-class was later superseded by the slightly larger Y-class. (ENT: "Broken Bow", "Fortunate Son", "Horizon")

23rd Century

File:MuddsShip.jpg

Harry Mudd's antiquated J-class vessel, in 2266.

In 2266, Harcourt Fenton Mudd possessed a J-class cargo ship which he utilized as a transport. While attempting to escape the USS Enterprise, Mudd burned out his ship's engines, causing it to drift into an asteroid belt. Although Mudd and his "cargo" of three women were rescued by the Enterprise, his J-class vessel was destroyed amongst the asteroids. (TOS: "Mudd's Women")

Starfleet maintained an old J-class vessel for use as a training vessel for Academy cadets. Christopher Pike was critically injured aboard a J-class ship during a training mission when one of the ship's baffle plates ruptured and Pike was exposed to delta radiation as he rescued a number of cadets. (TOS: "The Menagerie, Part I")

What can be seen of Mudd's transport bears no resemblance to the Horizon, and Pike's training ship was never shown on screen, so they cannot canonically be established as members of the same class as the ECS Horizon. The designation may have multiple applications, much as the "Antares class" has had over time.
