J. Gump was a Starfleet officer in the year 2370, the captain of the USS Hispaniola.
Under Gump's command, the vessel visited the Sol system, and was due to arrive at Deep Space 9 on stardate 47553.2, according to an arrival roster recorded in that station's library computer. (DS9: "Whispers")
The name was not mentioned in dialog; it was simply listed in an okudagram graphic of an arrival roster on a viewscreen. The name is likely a reference to the character Jenny Gump from Forrest Gump. The graphic was also populated by a number of other in-jokes. The ship's "USS" prefix suggests it was a Starfleet vessel.
