Judith Ann "Judy" Lawrence (born 14 December 1934; age 89) was the wife of author James Blish. Following the death of Blish in 1975, Lawrence completed his work on the anthology Star Trek 12 and the novella Mudd's Angels. Outside of Star Trek, Lawrence was a notable science fiction artist, producing the covers of a number of books and magazine issues.

Biography[]

Born in 1934 in New York, Lawrence had writing in her blood, for both of her parents were professional pulp fiction writers.

She was James Blish's second wife. They married in 1964, and moved to England in 1968, along with her mother, Muriel.

After Blish's death in 1975, she moved to Athens in Greece, and lived there for a number of years.

Other names she wrote under were variants of her married name "Judith Blish", and "Dr. Frank Freeperson".[1]

Star Trek work[]

Lawrence had some involvement with Blish's Star Trek anthologies prior to Star Trek 12, but the extent of her involvement is unclear. It is believed at the very least she looked over the manuscripts and suggested ideas; others suggest she actually wrote parts of them, meaning she should have been credited. Because she and her husband lived in England, they would not have gotten to see all of the episodes before they adapted them. Instead, their adaptations were largely script based.

A similar question arises over her mother, Muriel Lawrence. She moved to England with the couple and was a professional author of many decades by that time. What she did, or didn't, contribute to the anthologies has not been ascertained.
