Since the 19th century, Italy was a nation-state whose territory encompassed the peninsula. In the 1920s, the fascism ideology was developed in response to the economic and social difficulties (DS9: "Far Beyond the Stars"). In the 1940s, Italy allied with the Nazi during the World War II.
- Italy may be part of the European Alliance since the 20th century, and join the United Earth government in the 22nd century.
In 2143, while orbiting Earth in the NX-Alpha, waiting for a glitch in the propulsion system to be cleared up at Starfleet Mission Control, A.G. Robinson noted that he saw Italy pass, several times. (ENT: "First Flight")
