An isoton is a measure of both mass and explosive yield used by Federation and Dominion science during the 24th century.
In 2373, Kilana had her Jem'Hadar troops fire ten isotons of explosives near a Jem'Hadar attack ship in which a team from Deep Space 9 was seeking shelter. (DS9: "The Ship")
In 2374, Captain Benjamin Sisko and his crew used ninety isotons of enriched ultritium to destroy a ketracel-white facility in Cardassian space. (DS9: "A Time to Stand")
Comparative list of measure
- Photon torpedoes are said to have maximum explosive yield of 25 isotons. However, these numbers vary to as much as 200 isotons. (VOY: "Scorpion, Part II")
- Malon export vessels can transport up to a maximum of 4 trillion isotons of antimatter waste. (VOY: "Juggernaut")
- According to the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Technical Manual, Quantum torpedoes have a yield of 50+ isotons.
Background
As with most other units of measure used in Star Trek: Voyager, isotons came to be used with unrealistic magnitudes such as four trillion isotons for the total yield of a Malon export vessel. As with most other measures used in Star Trek there are no direct conversions to real world measures given.
However, the Star Trek: The Next Generation Technical Manual provides information that can be used to calculate this data. A standard Starfleet photon torpedo has a "warhead" containing 1.5 kg of matter and 1.5 kg of anti-matter, and a 25 isoton yeild. At 100% efficiency, that amount would produce the equivalent of 64.41 megatons of explosive power. Divide that by 25, and you get 2.6 megatons/isoton.
